| Giving Dartmoor Heritage Foals a Future |
Registered
charity The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust (DPHT) raises essential
funds every year to add value to the annual foal crop of Dartmoor
Heritage colts. This year the Trust will be gelding 50 colt foals
not suitable for breeding.
This is a major investment for the charity, but with the support
of three local vets: George Austin www.southmoorvets.co.uk Hugh Peplow www.mmpvets.co.uk
and Ully Arnold at Moor View Vets Bovey Tracey, cost have
been reduced to just £50.
This ensures these geldings can live a long and useful life as
riding ponies or as conservation grazing animals. If you would

| New Group for Mountain and Moorland Enthusiasts
in America |
On January 18, the National Pony
Society gained a new area chapter and took an important step
towards promoting British Native Ponies in the United States
when the Society's Council unanimously voted to accept NPS America's
application for membership.
NPS America will promote, support, and recognise Mountain &
Moorland and British Riding ponies in America. While many of
these pony breeds are embraced in the United States, others are
little known with rarer breeds, like the Dales and Highland slowly
growing in popularity. However the Connemara and Welsh, continue
to be top choices for equine enthusiasts. NPS America will cultivate
these ponies as safe, versatile, and talented mounts for both
the amateur and professional horseman, while acting as a resource
for breeders and owners alike in maintaining the traditional
character of these breeds.

College Students & Members of the
Public
Shown Foal Handling Techniques |
Equine and animal care students at Bicton College in East
Devon learnt how to train and handle wild Dartmoor pony foals
at a recent two day training workshop at the college run by the
Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust (DPHT) in conjunction with Positive
Horsemanship.
The students were given the opportunity to both observe the training
at close hand and handle the wild foals, with the aim of giving
them a greater understanding of animal behaviour and also increasing
their personal confidence.
The Trust is also ran a Wild Foal Training demonstration at the
college later that evening where Vanessa Bee of Positive Horsemanship
and Dru Butterfield of DHPT gave an entertaining and educational
commentary throughout the evening. This gave the audence the
opportunity to watch completely wild Dartmoor Ponies ground started
in five foundation skills: catching, leading, loading, tying
up and feet handling |
