The Kerry Bog Pony is a small native pony, at present being between the sizes of 10hh and 12hh. Our society welcomes them in any colour, or indeed size, if their breeding line goes back to the original DNA samples recorded with Weatherbys. Kerry Bog Ponies were used to bring seaweed from the beaches to fertilize the fields, for bringing turf from the bogs and often taking the family to church on Sundays. They are a strong, surefooted pony with an easy attitude, being easy to break, for either riding or driving. They are intelligent and learn quickly and are very quick to respond to a kind and loving home, indeed in our opinion, no horsey home should be without one! This year five ponies have been shipped to USA with a further five again being shipped next May. One pony is going to Jerez ,Spain .These are all yearlings and youngsters leaving to promote and build up herds abroad. As members of the Irish Kerry Bog Pony Society we are keen to hold on to our breeding lines but also encouraging export to promote the development of these lovely ponies - we can't be too selfish and keep them all to ourselves! If anyone would like any further information about this fascinating breed please feel free to write to us at our web site and good luck with all your pony interests! Arlene Aston |
