Box
High Risk
Latin Name: Buxus sempervirens
Description:
Box normally grows as an evergreen shrub but it can grow to 7m in height. It has dark-green oval leaves which grow in opposite pairs along the branches. Small clusters of greenish/white flowers grow in leaf axils.

Symptoms:
Lack of co-ordination, diarrhoea, convulsions and coma. Death is usually caused by respiratory failure.

Notes:
Although box is usually grown as a garden plant poisoning has been reported in horses. This has usually come about because the horse has gained access to a garden containing box or box clippings have been left where they can be eaten. However in normal circumstances horses are reluctant to eat box as it has a nasty odour when bitten.
