High RiskCowbane is a tall, hairless, perennial which grows to about 1.2m in height. The plant has triangular leaves which are divided in to 2 or 3 fingers. Cowbane flowers July and August. It produces umbels of white to pink flowers in some 10 to 20 rays. It prefers damp habitats including fens and marshes
Salivation, diluted pupils, spasmodic convulsions, abdominal pain.
Not normally diarrhoea.
Notes:
Cowbane is rather scarce. The root or leaves can be fatal whether
green or dry. Its is important therefore to take care if ditching,
or digging in a field where horses are grazing. This plant can
be fatal in a few hours, although survival of the first few hours
can mean recovery.
